Website owners can earn extra money by simply placing ads through Google Adsense. The ads are taken from their Adwords Program that relate to the content or theme of that page. For example, a page about dogs would rotate ads for pet-related products and services.
But as you might suspect, there really is an art and a "science" to optimizing your website to work well with the advertisements. Remember, you do not get paid unless people click. Here are 10 important tips to consider:
Horizontal Display of 4 Image Ads: This ad placement works well for drawing attention and increasing click-thrus.
Blend: Ads should not intrude on the content, but rather be a part of it.
Placement: Above the fold and in the top section to the left.
Wider: Google says a wider footprint is better then a taller one.
More Is Better: To generate more revenue, put ads on every single page of your site.
Multiple Ad Units: Google allows three ads on any one page.
Colors: When choosing colors for your ad layouts, pick ones that go with your web pages. You can select up to four rotating color palettes when generating your ad code.
Channels: Channels track different ad formats and color schemes to find out which ad units are working best.
Image Ads: With Adsense you can opt in to show only text based ads or a combination of both text and image ads.
Section Targeting: By adding special tags, you are assisting Google in knowing where the "real content" is on your pages, resulting in more targeted ads and higher click-thru rates.
Remember, nothing takes the place of good content. Before placing ads on your pages, make sure that you have a quality site with information and resources people will want to see to ensure continual traffic. You will want to test different ad formats, colors and placements to find out what works best with your site. There is no one size fits all so use this information as a general guideline for tweaking your pages.
